Cisco and United Health Building Nation’s First TeleHealth Presence Network

July 16, 2009

Cisco continues to demonstrate how pervasive video-based service networks might become in the years ahead.  Today, the Wall Street Journal reported on the launch of America’s first telepresence based healthcare network.   United Health is partnering with Cisco’s HealthPresence unit to extend its “Connected Care” telehealth network to rural and underserved populations.

The notion of video and web-based delivery of healthcare is not new, but the actual execution in the marketplace is!  We are still a few years away from fully immersive care based on diagnostic tools that blend video, sensors, and haptics – but this is a very positive step forward for the field of medicine as telehealth solutions expand access to homes, schools, and work environment across the globe.
